Myspace is for lame-ass little goths – the voice of youth speaks

Just when you think that myspace.com is becoming as ubiquitous with the yoot as texting, someone reminds you that even things that sound underground and hip to your thirtysomething ears are hideously mainstream and Coldplay-like MOR nonsense to someone.

My
little brother is 15, has two hard rock (though that’s obviously going to be the wrong way to describe them) bands, a PSP-habit, affected misanthropic tendencies and a deep disdain for myspace.com.

"It’s
full of Emos," he sneered about the social networking phenomenon that holds older social media watchers in thrall, "Lame ass little goths…"

He admits
that he has a couple of myspace.com pages for his bands – that’s just what you have to do these days as even Emos go to gigs – but he doesn’t work
the networks. He prefers more underground sites for promoting bands.

As for the wonderful world of myspace blog posts, IM and email, he tells: "If I want
to speak to someone I give them a phone call or text them."

  1. Fascinating, Antony. I imagine your brother would have his finger on the pulse—and I had always wondered where young people got the time to use Myspace et al. The pattern is not dissimilar to when we were his age: what our parents thought was cool to us was probably passé as we rebelled.

  2. Yeeeeeeeesss! Time to set up that Bebo account…
