Hot or Not for homes?

The whole rating idea has been applied to people’s rooms in their houses for a new site called, appropriately “Rate My Room“. People post photos and video of their immacualate and gracious homes and invite people to rate them and leave comments.

The site has been set up by HGTV, a US cable TV station and I think it works pretty well – although it’s a little heavy on the ads.

The concept seems to have won people over – and you can see why. People’s houses are often a “passion point” if not an  obsession for some. It’s natural that some people are going to want to show off their interior design efforts to more than just visitors now they have the chance.

  1. People have been using Flickr to do this in a lo-fi way for a while, and it is strangely addictive.

  2. Check out Decor Next Door, where you can upload photos, have them rated or have a design decision submitted to a vote, and professional designers will give you free advice.

  3. Al, that is actually very cool – thanks.

  4. Antony, thanks for checking out Decor Next Door. Glad you liked the site.

  6. There’s another similar site out there called HomeAndTell which I really like. It feels like there is a real community there. Not sure if I like the idea of just rating people’s homes – it seems a little strange. It’s just nice to be able to take a look inside.

  7. Nice concept and site. Seems to be well thought out! This one is again a little different from what’s already there, so all the rate my room kind of sites add something new. There’s also another one called Roominsight.com which tries to create a kind of community for this: http://www.roominsight.com

I agree that it’s a great idea to show off your interior design ideas on the web and get people to comment. That way, you’ll get many more comments and they won’t be shy to tell the truth, unlike guests you invite into your home, who won’t be inclined to say if they don’t like things they see there. Interior design may seem a forbidding commitment because of the enormity of the change and the cost and trouble involved. But it should really be fun, reflect your personality and fire your creativity too. Then you will have a true feeling of ownership of the interior, so you’ll feel relaxed and at home. I have had very happy experiences with Domane – they are an excellent firm of interior designers who do very impressive interiors. I have worked with them and they are highly professional and full of ideas:
