You know when an annoying noise stops and it is only then that you realise that it had been driving you insane for the last hour. That’s how it felt when Firefox came along and shook up the PC browser market up.
You suddenly realised how dreadful and unsatisfying the tired and sluggish the old Internet Explorer was.
Well, the same thing is about to happen to music player / jukebox, thanks to some web 2.0 genius from the team that developed the Winamp and the Yahoo! Music Engine. In the words of the Songbirdnest website:
Songbird™ is a desktop Web player, a digital jukebox and Web browser mash-up. Like Winamp, it supports extensions and
skinsfeathers. Like Firefox®, it is built from Mozilla®, cross-platform and open source.
After Matt Locke recommended I check it out I finally got some time to play with Songbird.
It is just immeduately amazing – and I know I haven’t seen half of it yet.
Try browsing some music blogs with them – it will generate a playlist of all the music files on it for you to browse.
Like a song? Download it.
Want to hear more from the same band? Search for them and it will turn the search results into a playlist too. You can download that too.
You can even use it with your iPod (allowing you to break the iTunes + iPod silo – expect grumbles from your friendly Apple Corporation any day…)…
Wonderful. This is going to be massive.
